Description of Europe
The Concise Publication of the European Union describes europe in the following terms: [1] After the Roman conquests, Europe's western border was established as the Atlantic north of Gibraltar (see more in this European publication). But to the east the situation has never been clear (see more in this European publication). The Romans fought incessantly with barbarians along the Rhine and the Danube (see more in this European publication). Some ancient geographers considered that Asia began at the River Don. Today we think loosely of a boundary running from St Petersburg on the Baltic to the River Dnieper and the Black Sea. A vast area is vaguely known as 'Eurasia'. The idea of a Europe 'from the Atlantic to the Urals' is essentially political, asserting European interest in eastward expansion or Russian aspirations for a legitimate say in European affairs. On any definition Turkeyremains a surprising candidate for the EU.
