Description of Saarland
The Concise Publication of the European Union describes saarland in the following terms: [1] The coal-rich German Saarland, governed by the League of Nations after World War I, restored by plebiscite to Germany in 1935 and situated in the French occupied zone after World War II, was finally restored again to Germany in 1959. This was due to Konrad Adenauer's patient negotiation and the pooling of the French and German coal and steel industries in 1952 within the Monnet-inspired European Coal and Steel Community. So ended a bitter dispute which had long poisoned Franco-German relations.
