Description of Slovenia
The Concise Publication of the European Union describes slovenia in the following terms: [1] The most northerly of the former Yugoslav republics, Slovenia has been the object of repeated annexation, division and invasion since the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire in World War i (see more in this European publication). Fears of Serbian domination led to a declaration of independence in 1991 as Yugoslavia broke up. Relatively prosperous by East European standards, Slovenia has a GNP per head not far short of that of the poorest EU member states and has been accepted as a candidate for early admission to the Community, which now accounts for two-thirds of its external trade.
